Verdi: Gems from Traviata

March 13, 2010

Giuseppe Verdi, by Giovanni Boldini.

Victor Opera Company
Verdi: Gems from Traviata

Recorded in 1914 or 1915

Unlike Pagliacci or Cavalleria Rusticana, La Traviata rates both sides of a twelve-inch record, giving us an Anglicized opera just over eight and a half minutes long. Chances are pretty good that this record at least touches on everything you love about Verdi’s opera, leaving out only the boring stuff that you have to get through to make it to the good parts.

These Victor opera records were released with black labels, marking them as part of the “popular” series, rather than the red labels reserved for serious music. How our perception of opera has changed over the past century!
