Jack Hylton: Greenwich Witch

March 22, 2010

Sheet music for another Zez Confrey composition.

Jack Hylton and His Orchestra
Greenwich Witch

Recorded in 1923

One of the first recordings by Jack Hylton’s band, before the electrical process, this already shows the kind of beyond-dance-music ambition his orchestra would show for the rest of its career. In this case, we have a composition by Zez Confrey, author of the famous “Kitten on the Keys,” whose piano novelties were extraordinarily popular in an era when many amateurs had the skill to play them.

This arrangement is a very close transcription of the piano solo. Not a lot has been done to adapt the score for the band; the arranger seems simply to have assigned the notes from the piano score to instruments that would work and left it at that. But it’s a good piano novelty, and it makes a good dance-band novelty as well.
