Oriental Week Bonus: The Real Thing

April 18, 2010

Sammy Shahen Orchestra
Racks El Arrous

Now that we’ve heard how American music suggested Eastern atmosphere, here’s a recording from Lebanon, probably in the 1950s. It doesn’t really seem to have a proper beginning, and it just fades out at the end; it’s almost as if someone walked into a Beirut cafe with a big old tape recorder and started recording, then got bored and walked out after three minutes.

I don’t know anything about the band, the musicians, or the date. But the band sure seems to be having fun, and I doubt whether you’ll find this particular recording anywhere else on the Web.

This is one of a big stack of Lebanese 78s a friend of mine rescued from a trash bin and gave to me, because he couldn’t imagine that anyone else would want them. So you’ll be hearing more authentic Lebanese music in the future.
